Being a great bus driver is much more than driving a big, yellow vehicle. It takes patience, commitment, and personability. It can be a stressful job, but it can be equally rewarding if you enjoy doing it. We believe a good bus driver is someone who... Cares About Safety At Student Transit, we are honored to be entrusted with the most precious cargo and always make safety our number one priority. That's why we think the best bus drivers are the ones who make safety their top priority as well. They are familiar with all the rules of the road and commit to driving attentively. Great bus drivers also know all of the recommended safety procedures and take them seriously. This helps to protect themselves, their passengers, and others on the road. Additionally, they should be able to perform basic maintenance on their vehicles in case of an emergency. Connects with the Community Bus drivers are responsible for ensuring their passengers remain safe and comfortable daily. One way to do this is by getting to know students and their families to build trust. Having a little background on everyone can help bus drivers understand each child's behaviors and support their guardians to feel good about sending them onto the bus every day. An effective bus driver should also be familiar with their local area, including knowing how to navigate routes efficiently and having an idea of events in which their students or other community members might be involved. This helps them to be more genuine and trustworthy figures. Is Friendly and Respectful Driving in any vehicle can sometimes be stressful. Add three more car lengths and dozens of small passengers, and there's even more pressure. An efficient bus driver should be able to stay calm and keep others calm in various situations, such as traffic, inclement weather, altercations between riders, or other emergencies. Similarly, they should be comfortable working with individuals from various backgrounds. If they continue riding for years, students often become familiar with their bus drivers and may look to them as comforting, friendly figures.
